Skype Tutoring
If you are not in our current service area, we are now offering tutoring via Skype.
Skype is an online video-phone service which is completely free to use. It allows us to conduct tutoring sessions much like an in-person session, from the comfort of your own home (with a proper internet connection, video, and headset). It is recommended for students age 10 and up with some computer proficiency. It is better for students who learn primarily through auditory and visual media; kinesthetic/tactile learners will have a more difficult time and should try to schedule in-person tutoring with a trained Orton-Gillingham professional in their area instead.
Some requirements for tutoring over Skype are as follows:
- You will need access to the following computer set-up:
- A PC running Windows® 2000, XP, Vista or 7. (Windows 2000 users require DirectX 9.0 for video calls). (Skype is also available for Mac and Linux, see www.skype.com for more info).
- A broadband Internet connection.
- A headset like this one.
- A computer with at least a 1GHz processor and 256 MB RAM.
- A webcam.
- For High Quality Video calls you will need a high quality video webcam and software, a dual-core processor computer and a fast broadband connection (384 kbps).
- A printer (preferrably color).
- We recommend a pen tablet or a scanner, as we will be dealing with symbols and characters which are difficult to input on a keyboard.
- Depending on your what your needs are, you may need to purchase some additional materials such as textbooks, workbooks, or flashcards. We can advise on cost.
- A Google Wave account is also helpful. We can provide you with an invitation as it is currently in Beta testing.
